Learn More about the Advanced Courses

The Canadian Red Cross Professional Responder courses, here known as Advanced Coures include Advanced First Aid, Emergency Medical Responder and First Responder. These courses are tailored to meet a higher level of First Aid response for Fire Departments, Law Enforcement, Rescue Teams, and workplace safety as defined by Schedule 2 of the Occupational Health and Safety code.

Taking an advanced course prepares you to understand and prepare for medical and traumatic emergencies placing high importance on recognizing and responding to life-threatening emergencies. Advanced courses equip the candidate with specialized interventions – airway management, oxygen administration, spinal immobilization to name a few – that may be conducive to stabilizing a person’s condition.

Who may be required to take a Professional Responder Course:

  • High-risk workers: Employees and safety officers in heavy industry, construction or remote camps where access to immediate medical care is delayed
  • Firefighters and Paramedics: Professional first responders, including those applying to city fire departments often required as a recruitment prerequisite
  • Maritime Personnel: Captains, mates and crew members on commercial vessels who require specialized Marine Advanced First Aid mandated by Transport Canada
  • Widerness Guides: Ourdoor recreation and wilderness rescue leaders working in remove, isolated settings.

Under Alberta OH&S regulations, an Advanced First Aid course is generally required for high-hazard workplaces that are isolated, have large numbers of employees on-site and are more that 20 to 40 minutes away from a medical facility. The exact requirement is governed by the OH&S Code Part 11 (Schedule 2 tables) and depends on three factors: hazard level, number of workers and travel time. An Advanced First Aid course is specifically mandated for the following shift:

  • High-hazard Workplaces:
    • 50 – 90 workers: if the site is over 40 minutes from the nearest health care facility
    • 100 or more workers: if the site is over 20 minutes from the nearest health care facility
  • Medium-hazard Workplaces:
    • 100 or more workers: if the site is over s40 minutes from the the nearest health care facility
