Basic (Emergency) First Aid courses are approved by Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) through the Canadian Red Cross. The Canadian Red cross is among the largest workplace safety training provider in Canada, and Breath for Life (First Aid Education) Inc, offers comprehensive Intermediate, Basic, Childcare and Advanced First Aid Courses among others. Under current provincial regulations, certifications must align with CSA Z1210:24 standards. As the nation is transitioning from Emergency First Aid to Basic First Aid designation, based on CSA requirements, Breath for Life (First Aid Education) Inc utilizes both identifiers for ease of recognition when selecting the correct First Aid and CPR course.
Workplace First Aid certificates are valid for 3 years. Employers must verify that the training received matches the regulatory standard for their workplace. as per the regulatory standards, an expired does not qualify the holder of the certificate for a renewal or recertification course: no extensions can be granted when a certificate is expired and the indifivuals(s) would be required to take the complete Basic (Emergency) First Aid course.
What is First Aid?
First Aid is the immediate, temporary care given to someone experiencing sudden injury or illness. Its core aim is to preserve life, prevent a condition from worsening and to promote recovery. The Basic (Emergency) First Aid courses, explore Primary and Secondary concerns, and include CPR and AED training. Primary considerations include life-threatening problems and concerns which require immediate First Aid attention and EMS (911) response. A person experiencing secondary problems and concerns that are not immediately threatening to life may still require medical attention to facilitate recovery; the First Aider must use discretion, based on a First Aid assessment, in their decision to call EMS (911). Scope of Practice First Aid considerations (topics) which define the Basic First Aid course are not as extensive as the Intermediate (Standard) First Aid course (topics). The focal point of these courses is hazard awareness, scope of practice understanding around assessment and First Aid treatment, understanding Occupational Health and Safety requirements and the many other consideration that must be explored in these courses.
