Cannabis Training for Workers

Cannabis TrainingCannabis Training for Workers

Cannabis Training for Workers is about gaining a better understanding between medical and recreational cannabis. Cannabis, also known as marijuana, weed, or pot, refers to products derived from the Cannabis sativa plant, containing psychoactive compounds like THC that cause a “high” and therapeutic effects. It is used for medical and recreational purposes through smoking, vaporizing (vaping), or ingestion (edibles), with key chemical components called cannabinoids (THC and CBD) impacting the brain and body.

Cannabis is generally not allowed in the workplace in Canada.  Employers can, and are encouraged to, create clear policies regarding the use, possession, and impairment of cannabis in their workplace. Employers have a “duty to accommodate” employees who use cannabis for medical purposes, up to the point of “undue hardship”. This means that authorized medical use must be treated similarly to other prescription medications. This being said, users of medical cannabis in safety-sensitive positions cannot be impaired or compromised in the performance of their job. While recreational cannabis is legal nationwide, employers maintain the right to enforce sobriety, particularly in safety-sensitive positions.

Cannabis Training provides an awareness of how cannabis effects the body and how it may impact on work performance, judgment and safety. Cannabis Training explains the laws relating to human rights legislation and the duty to accommodate employees who have medical authorization to use cannabis. This course focuses on impairment and provides information about an employees rights and responsibilities.
